Royal Enfield expects to sell over a lakh bikes by 2012
 






Bike manufacturer Royal Enfield, a unit of Eicher Motors, said on Wednesday it expects its bike sales to jump over 90% by 2012 as it expects the premium bike market to expand with new players such as US-based Harley-Davidson Motor Co entering, it senior official said.


The company is expecting its current sales of 58,000 bikes to cross 100,000 bikes by 2012, mainly driven by the metro and mini metro regions.
“We expect to grow by 15% this year — this is a conservative approach and I believe we would grow higher than that. We invested Rs 60 crore over the last three years and are looking
to invest Rs 60-80 crore in the next three years through internal accruals,” R L Ravichandran, the company’s chief executive officer, told DNA.
The company recorded a 20% growth in sales last year.
Royal Enfield would also expand its exports from existing 5% (of total sales) to 15-20% as it grows its business in Europe.
Royal Enfield plans to completely shift to a new engine model for its mobikes from April, Eicher group chairman Siddhartha Lal said. It has already started using the new engine in its bikes.
“We will stop production of the old engines for Royal Enfield from March 31. We are doing this because the traditional bullet engine does not meet the Bharat Stage III emission norms,” he said.
The Chennai-based mobike maker is working on increasing production capacity at its current unit as the demand is increasing. “We currently have a waiting period of six to eight weeks for delivery, that is why we are need to increase output to meet rising demand,” Lal said.
Royal Enfield showcased three new bikes in the Autoexpo, Classic Chrome, Classic Battlegreen and the concept Caferacer for the international market. Classic Chrome would be launched in India by September.
The company would introduce Caferacer in 2012 in the European markets followed by Indian launch. The bike maker has a turnover of Rs 400 crore and produces from its Chennai facility.

I don't know about that. Sounds like a mix of languages.

From the article quoted I think Lakh= 100,000 and Crore = perhaps 1,000,000,000

"The company is expecting its current sales of 58,000 bikes to cross 100,000 bikes by 2012"

or "...to cross lakh bikes by 2012".

I've always liked them. They have some really nice stuff like hand-bent copper tubing for fuel lines. Last year (09) they made a major upgrade to the line and added unit construction, EFI, and some other things that make the bikes a lot more reliable. But I'm not sure that's a good thing, part of the appeal of the bike, for me anyway, is the 50 y/o design and engineering.
