I was gonna go with the new 250 ninja's but i was told I'd be wasting my money and eventually would want to get something bigger. What's something in between that has some pick up but not over 600cc's in a sportsbike?

a 500 Ninja or Suzuki, I wouldn't go any bigger then that to learn on and the 250 isn't a bad choice either.

They're ALL a "waste of money". Every last one of them. Yeah, you might eventually want something bigger, but after a year or so on the Ninja you'll actually be ready for the bigger bike. And if you decide you don't like the 250 anymore, you can probably sell it for 2/3 of what you paid for it (if you haven't wadded it up, that is). If you buy used, you'll more-likely be able to get every dime you forked-out back on it.
