I've tried on a lot of helmets over the years, and owned a fair share of those, primarily full-face. There is no evidence that just being a "modular" makes a helmet unsafe. I would NOT buy one that both sides of the latches were not metal. However, Fit and Utility are #1 and #2 priorities - with #1 by-far-and-away dwarfing all the others combined. If it doesn't Fit - you won't wear it. Period.

I also suggest you buy one yourself, even if you "think" you're not going to ride that often. See Priority #1 above - your own helmet fits you, it's always "ready" for you, and once you've gotten-into the habit of wearing one, becomes like a protective jacket: i.e. a "second skin". You become possessive of it, and will be more likely to have it on in the event something happens - of which will decrease markedly after about a solid year in the saddle.

The only helmets I actively steer people away-from are those stupid "beanie" novelty-helmets with their fake, 3" "DOT"-brand fake stickers. Might as well get your favo salad-bowl out of the cabinet and wear THAT down to Bike Night.

what about those really cool Kraut Helmets with the spike out the top?

Lol.

Yeah, as I was typing that last post and got to the "I will only ride rare" part I got to thinking....

The most dangerous pilots are those who only fly "rarely"... they get rusty....they get "behind the plane"...they get reactive instead of anticipating and preventing.

All the more reason for me to get my own gear. So that its there and convenient and its mine....and I'll be more tempted to make use of it...and the bike. Assuming the wife isnt out riding it. hahahahaha

When we asked the difference between the Shoei and the HJC at half the price. He said, "Try it on." we did and could instantly feel the difference in fit and it wasnt nearly as functional. Where-as each rider will have the manufacturer and model that best suits them. the RF-1100 seems to be right for my wife...for now.

So....rather than renting, I'll find something that I like on craigslist. No need to splurge...or to skimp. After all....its only my brain.

Who would rent helmets? Does anyone really want to catch someone else's lice infestation?

You can get a serviceable full face helmet for under $100.

However I'd suggest avoiding helmets that recall the German National Socialist Workers Party. They give some of us itchy trigger fingers. Whenever I see one of those Nazi beanies I think, "Target." And I'm not referring to the chain of stores.

Vroom,

Check out the recent Motorcycle Consumer News where they reviewed and rated modular hats.

While you're at it, subscribe. It's a great resource.

Thanks for the recommendation on the consumer guide.

I'll head there now.

And thanks again to everyone for being tolerant of my admittedly pathetic attempts at humor.

I don't think that we're 'tolerating' it...

We're used to much worse!
