Sach Race: No Burgess Again For Rossi
by staff Thursday, July 14, 2011 Many column inches and audio syllables have been reported this season on Valentino Rossi's struggles to cope with the revamped-but-still-recalcitrant Ducati Desmosedici GP11. But Rossi's worries are nothing compared to those of his longtime crew chief, Jeremy Burgess. Burgess didn't join Rossi two weeks ago for the Grand Prix of Italy in Mugello, instead returning to his native Australia to be with his wife, Claudine, who recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now the word is that Burgess' return to GP won't happen this weekend at the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring. Ducati Team Technical Manager Max Bartolini filled in as Rossi's crew chief at Mugello, where Rossi qualified 12th and finished sixth. Bartolini was essentially Ducati WSBK R&D at the factory for years but he was poached by BMW who quickly decided they didn't need him. Ducati hired him back, Rossi chose him as his engine builder and now his stand in crewchief in Burgess' place. Human issues always trump those of a mechanical kind. Real life is more important than motorcycle racing. The thoughts of everyone who follows this sport, including everyone at Soup, are with Burgess and his family. Superbikeplanet.com
