There's a lot of fairly good measurements on KLR650.net showing a 21 to 25 lb difference between the bikes wet. I think the old bike's weight was understated. While I ride an old KLR amoung other things, I have friends with the new KLR, and really I'd say it's a small fraction better a road bike, and a small fraction worse an off road/dirt bike. They shortened the suspension travel, but increased the fork diameter. Despite this you'll still do most of the upgrades (Like supsension) you would have done on the old one. The plastic is a bit more expensive when you drop it on that knarly rutted two track on the new one. You can get a screaming deal on the old ones if you can find them in dealerships, maybe $4,300 or so if you negotiate.
