![]() Back in the mists of time when the earth had cooled and the dinosaurs had finally departed there sprung up from the ruin of nuclear holocaust of Japan GODZILLA!.... er no I mean Honda. Honda was a small engine manufacturer that moved into farm equipment and motorbikes. The motorbike line was designated by a "C". C100, C105, C110 etc designated the small 50cc-90cc bikes. Larger bikes with pressed steel frames, the Dream style were designated "CA". Then there were the sporty style bikes. They were designated "CB" to distinguish them from the "CA". Scrambler style bikes were designated "CL" for the same reason. The letters "CB" don't mean anything like "city bike" which was just some delusional invention. The 250 Dream was the CA72. The 250 Hawk was the CB72. Number designations were simply from engineering design models.
Later Honda started using "C" variations plus the engine displacement for their larger sport style bikes to reduce customer confusion. Earlier a C100 was 50cc and a CB77 was 305cc. So they just went with C90, CB160, CB350, CL175 etc. Later Honda designated "custom" style cruisers as CB900C for example. The 900 sporty bike was the CB900F. By this time the marketing geniuses had taken over so "F" stood for fast, "C" for cruiser. The CA line had been completely dropped from lack of customer interest. The "R" was added later to designate even more sporty versions with fairings, etc. There were also CBR1000F models which designated sporty bikes which weren't so radical. "R's" now keep getting added as a marketing ploy. More "R's" must mean it's faster and better, right? After all Yamaha only has one "R" in the R1. Honda has three "R's" in the CBR1000RR so it's gotta be better. Originally the letters had no special significance aside from engineering designations. Now the letters are partially marketing ploys.

![]() OK Dr. S, splain the derivation of the F and K as in CB 550 K or CB 550 F. I had a K and new a guy with an F. It was cool.
I'm going back outside it's too nice. Got in my spririted ride by leaving really, really, really early this am. Where the hell did all these people come from?

![]() C means 4cyl....B means it's a bike...R means road and RR means it's meant for Ricky Racers..
That's why the best bike Honda ever made, not counting the step through 90's that they have sold millions of, is the CBX...C for four cylinder, B for "but wait ! there's 2 more !!!" and X for "cool enough for Racer X to ride"
