My 83 shadow is having problems overheating. after riding for only several miles engine becomes excessively hot and coolant boils and overflows onto the ground. Checked radiator and there is plenty of coolant. I have a feeling it is the thermostat or the water pump. Has anyone ever had a similar problem and what was the solution? Any thoughts or tips are appreciated.

Could be a bad pump or a stuck thermostat or the system may be plugged with rust and crud. I'd replace the 'stat and use a radiator flushing agent. You do use anti-freeze and change it every couple years, right?

A few things it could be:
Bad thermostat (most likely) Clogged coolant lines/radiator Bad water pump This is what my bike had -- Warped heads -- this causes overpressure, compression gas was pushing my coolant out after the engine warmed up. |
