It definitely seems like the problem is in the airbox, but for the life of me, I can understand what could have happened to make the change, let alone what to do to fix it.

Myself not knowing valves, but maybe as a question for the others to pick their brains.
Could the intake valve's opening, creating the suction of air into the cyinder be what the noise is coming from? And why would it be that loud if not heard before?
Or did I just demonstrate my ignorance of the subject with that question?

Make sure that the airbox is sealed properly and the carbs are also connected tightly. Make sure all the hoses you removed when you pulled the fuel tank and valve cover were re-connected correctly. chances are 99 out of 100 that you have not reconnected everything as it was.

that seems likely, based on my (lack of) skill. However, the only hose that I had to remove was the fuel line from the stop**** to the carb, and this appears to be back on as normal.

Default HI there. I just bought a bike, similar problem +more!

So when I open the throttle the engine dies until I open it 1/4 of the way, then the engine picks up normally as it should. 1st thing I did was clean the carb and jets properly and put a new accelerator pump in. No joy. This problem is almost eliminated when the choke is opened even a tiny way. Throttle response returns almost completely. I believe the bike is running lean at low rpm's. I'm told I should spray carb cleaner or E Z Start around the manifold to the cylinder but after the carb to see if the engine picks up RPMS. If it does then it is sucking in that EZ burn spray through an airgap. I did notice when the carb was off that a gasket was a bit old and shabby, but there was an O ring behind it, I wonder if the gasket is letting air in? I will check. Anyway I forgot while typing what problem your bike had whether it was the problem I just mentioned or another problem. My bike has 2 problems, THe 2nd prob with mine is that under acceleration the engine has a growling sound. I thought the valves needed adjusting. In the manual it says between 0.002 and 0.004 of an inch. before adjusting I could get a 0.004 in there. After adjusting I could just quite not get a 0.004 in there, but a 0.003 went in with a bit of resistance. Sounds about right, right? Growling noise still there, only under acceleration, sounds like a rumble, as if the cam chain was rumbling or something. What could it be. Im gonna check the airbox and filter , and put in new spark plugs, who knows how old these are! I will report back if it fixes the growl under acceleration. I checked the valve clearances twice after turning the engine to the T mark in the timing hole. But if the T represents top dead center, then what are the 2 lines that show in the circle before that? timing lines I suppose. Night all hope this msg relates or helps someone! L
