Is there really any competition? After Kawasaki dropped out (When was that? Oh, right when Honda and Campbell started winning!) The race has become a Honda promotional ad. Please don't take this as denigrating JC's talent, it's just that the 1000 seems more like a fast trail ride for most competitors, except for the fortunate (Honda) few.

What about KTM and BMW? They are incredible bikes. I think it says something about hondas reliability more than anything...

do KTM or BMW run the The Baja 1000 ? I guess not.

Try the Dakar rally 2001, when JC got 8th place on a private Honda (he didn't had factory suport then) behind 6 ktm and 1 bmw.

Kawasaki dropped out after a number of close calls (locals boobie trapping the course, federales, etc.) that had people re-thinking Baja racing in the first place. Then Danny Hamel was killed when an off duty police officer went the wrong way on the course and hit him head on. Danny died of internal injuries and Kawasaki hasn't been back.
