it's the miracle of advertising/marketing. Ask most people what's the first word that comes to mind when you hear Honda?

It was true when the competition was Triumph and Norton. Not so much anymore...

I live in hope all their FX frames will break and Buell will win "Daytona 200." Actually they did have an engine failure or 2 last year as i dimly recall...

Actually, it didn't have all that much to do with advertising/marketing. You can't convince people an unreliable piece of crap is actually reliable by simply advertising an untruth. Truth is, Honda was producing a much more reliable motorcycle in the days of Triumph, Norton, AMF H-D. That's a reputation, not advertising. All advertising can do is spread and amplify that message.

The fact that Honda is still considered the most reliable motorcycle in a time where just about every motorcycle is excellent is more a testament to the fact that if you sell crappy products, the stink will stay on you for ages.

It works both ways, if you produce crap products years ago the stink does stay with you, but that in itself is ignorant and stupid.

To claim Harleys, Triumphs, Nortons... etc are crap now because they had quality problems in the 70s is just as stupid as claiming Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki,...etc will always be better than everthing else because they produced quality products in the past.

Just like the stock market, historical performace is no GUARANTEE of the future performance.

Anyone who claims the opposite of the above has only themselves to blame..........and usually tend to cry, b1tch, and moan the most....or are in complete denial...........

"It was just a fluke thing when my Honda Accord ran over my leg due to the faulty ignition switch, Honda's never break down......

honda doesn't have an ad campaign that convinces anyone that their products are perfect that i am aware of. i liked your broad brush stroke though.

did you happen to do all the proper maintenance on the two hondas that siezed, pray tell?

Yea I can't stand the heat. Someone calls you a name and it ruffles your feathers. Of course, making fun of someone who just found out the new bike they bought for a small fortune may have a major structural problem that they had no way of knowing about, that much less to get upset about. A$$.

I think you misunderstood. I was speaking in terms of marketing. My point was that Honda's reputation for reliablility was made during a period when the other manufacturers were selling far less reliable machines and that it didn't have that much to do with advertising and marketing. You can advertise quality all you want, but if you sell a lousy product, it's suicide--and word will spread so fast, no amount of advertising will be able to maintain that facade.

Honda was so far and away superior during that time, it became the clear quality leader--it established a fine reputation amoung owners, dealers and the press. My point is that most people still believe that Honda is the best in terms of reliability, in large part, because the failures of the 70s still linger around the other brands. Stupid, yes. But when people form perceptions, especially over many years, even cold hard facts don't necessarily change them, at least not in the short term.

Just the fact that many people still believe Harleys, for example, are far less reliable than most other bikes--especially the Japanese--proves that perception is more powerful than reality. Past performance is no guarantee of future performance, but most people believe it's an indication of future, or, er, present performance.

Now, if Honda continues to have these mishaps over an extended period of time, people may start to think otherwise.

You'd be hard pressed to find any bad bikes today. But people still believe Honda is supreme, even if it's not grounded in reality. Why do you think may here take such glee in pointing out Honda's failures?
