Re: Husky SM610: Good Canyon Bike?

Local dealer sells both KTM's and husky. Went looking at KTM. his put is he generally likes the huskys better. to prove it,he gave me a test ride on an SM610. Only 5 miles on a flat and windy (gentle curves) back road. Only got a little over 60, but what a BLAST. Didnt ride it enough to judge long term confort ,but ergonomics were fine(seat would probably not be good for rides of more than a couple hours). Brakes were great, shifted like butter, incredibly flickable and more than enough acceleration without excessive gear rowing. I want one!..actually i want a street legal enduro but close enuff.

I'd have to say good choice. I've been considering a Husky myself. They look good and run good. Just a few years ago you'd spend a small fortune to get a YZ426 supermoto ready, and then you'd still have the hassle of registering it. But these Husky's are ready to go. The suspension on the Husky four-strokes (of all sizes) may not be good enough to make these bikes competitive on an MX track, but they're more than adequeate for street duty. Still, for the money you'll spend it might not be the best "do it all" bike, or hold its value so well. Great looking bike though. And a true MX'er for the street.

Yep, that's the one I was talking about. Pretty quick cat, no?

No, I just make this stuff up. Yeah, they were early model 610s and had trouble with the balancers. Vibrated like pure hell when they failed. To be honest I don't know what about the balancers failed as I don't know the mechanism. Glad to hear Husky has sorted out their issues. Adding to the issues, both of these guys live quite a ways from their dealer. But they love Huskies and seem glad to risk not having a dealer close at hand. Another buddy rides an '05 TE450. He lost an engine seal after a hard week of pounding in the Rockies. There are several other TE450 riders in that group and their bikes have proven to be bullet proof. Those motors may be high strung but they do seem to hold together.

I guess I never really rode the Dragon.

1) it doesn't look that fast to me; and 2) long bikes like the Gold Wing require more lean angle for a given rate of turn.

A short wheelbase bike is going to be cornering much faster at equal lean angles.

I'm not running the guy down-- he's obviously a good rider if he's in the business of riding the dragon.
