First thing to do is to measure yourself. "About 6' 2'-3" ain't good enough. One inch can make the difference between an XR and a KLR. Start with your inseam. Measure from the giblets to the center of the arch and subtract by the average height of your athletic socks. Add that to the circumference of your left and right forearms (as measured two inches down from you elbow). That sum will give you the seat height in ft/lbs. Then go get the bike you like.

Given that the guy'd been riding dual sport bikes I get the feeling that his "banging around on dirt roads" consists of more than just riding on a dirt road. I used to drive my Mitsubishi Eclipse on dirt roads all the time, but I wouldn't suggest it as an upgrade path to someone who wants more power than their Jeep Wrangler.

I'm 6-5' 205, and an old codger to boot, rode damn near every kinda rig thats ever been made. (LF) Try the DR 650, simple, bullet proof, air cooled, one carb. Change the seat and ride it anywhere you want. BTW, when the Bridgestones wear out. replace them with something else.

The kid's been whacking trees with an XL250. It's a far cry from there to a DL650. Just trying to give some _progression_ to his riding development.

Fair enough. Of course a good DRZ400(SM, SE or S) would be slammin' for him then, but out of his price range. A used KLR would definitely fit the bill though.

I jst bought a DRZ400S for $800 with less than 4000 miles on it. I know of 2 E's in the area that had titles and went for less than $2K. This in an area known for overpriced bikes.

My left forearm comes out to ~11", but my right one is like 26" in circumference -- does that throw the equation off?
