I ride my SVs on dirt roads all the time, Avon Distanzias work pretty well. It's not quite the trailbike my Super Sherpa is but I have no problem taking it on any of the national forest roads. It is better on dirt roads than my '89 Pacific Coast, but I've driven it on those roads as well. Riding your street bike on dirt roads is an excellent learning environment It teaches you what the bike feels like when traction starts to go away. This gets those reactions built in so you don't fall down on slippery pavement.

Suzuki V-Strom 650 is an obvious choice after you add some engine guards and a belly pan -- oh and gets some better tires than stock. It's a great sport-tourer, canyon carver, and a decent off-roader with the right tires.

I second this motion. The Super Sherpa is just a a lot of fun if you can find one. Unfortunately, they are not offered new in the U.S. anymore, although I think they still may be available new in Canada.

It won't be a freeway bike, but should be ok on most secondary roads, especially if you only weigh 170 lbs. The KLR 650 is another choice but It'll have to be one with some age on it for $2500.

"tough enough to bang around in the dirt" doesn't exactly describe the WeeStrom.

I have an XR650L. Good trail bike, decent street bike, not so good on the freeway. Gets decent gas mileage. Don't try to make it go faster as the engine can turn into a grenade if stressed too much. They seem to get cheap when they get old, and Honda never updates them so parts are no problem. They suck in deep sand, though.

I bet the right dealer wouldn't be far off that.

XR650 or a DRZ are the only choices that offer real dirt performance, but both of those will be far, far removed from a modern MX bike. If you just need to hit some dirt roads from time to time, then you should slowly migrate (as your budget allows) towards the adventure-touring rigs.
