Re: look at the Buell.....

Don't you mean, "Sit on one if they'll let ya?"

I ride a Big American Bike. Still can't get over the "Do not sit on bikes without sales associate" signs.

You could also add MPB hardened steel valve collets and bring the valve maintenance interval up to 24k miles.

There are still new ZRX 1200s out there within your price range. You may also be able to find a leftover 1200 Bandit. So long as you're, um, mature enough to regulate your own right hand, those are pretty close to perfect commuter bikes for a 40-mile commute. Any bike will do, really, but some will do better than others.

Dual-sport singles are a lot of fun, but a 40-mile round trip might seem less attractive after a few months. Another ideal solution would be the 650 V-Strom--wonderful riding position, windscreen and rack, hard bags from DL 1000 will fit, and hard to argue with the engine. SV650 is more fun, but V-Strom would be, by far, the better day-in, day-out commuter.

I wouldn't have any problem buying a new bike, and if you've got to rely on it, the new bike warranty is a great incentive.

If you're buying used, go BMW and get a low-mile boxer or K75 that has obviously been very well cared for by someone who loved it. Properly maintained, those things will easily top 100,000 miles without a teardown.

Bottom line: It's all good, and your CX500 was a very interesting bike.

With or w/o machine guns/cannon? Might consider FW190 or P-51 also. I'd probably go with a flat-blacked out P-47 but then getting home after a rough day counts ALOT to me.

Argues the point that less than a couple grand could go a long way toward making a CX500 "New".

That's caused by a mental malady common to owners of old Triumphs. It's called Amal Anxiety Syndrome.

VStrom 650 ABS

Its a brilliant commuter.

Sheer brilliant.

Suzuki bandit 600... not my favorite but nobody has mentioned it yet and it seems to fit the bill. The engine is as reliable as a hammer. The 1200 is just as good with a smaller case of asthma, but its probably more bike than you want. By the way, if you're 6'2" and you get a 250 ninja, I am really just going to have to punch you. A 500 ninja is as small as you're allowed to go sir, and even that is pushing it...

I said M109R, not ME109. :-p

Though I'd take a P-38 then I can tell everyone I fly a Lightning and they'll think it's a Buell. :-)
