Saving a couple of bucks on gas isn't worth it. Back in my reckless youth my only transpoortation was a Yamaha 650. Hardcore or not, when it's your only way home and it's raining, ALL the fun is gone. When it's miserable outside you'll be miserable on the bike. Maybe not the first time, but by the end of March you'll hate it and by Summer you'll stop riding for fun because you're sick of frigid 10 PM rides!

The Pilot Road is a superb cold weather AND rain tire. I ride about 42 miles RT doen to 25deg F.

Hehe... Back in my reckless youth I couldn't wait to turn 14yo so I could get off the school bus and ride my bike on the road!
First hardcore memory followed by many others: Twelve miles one way, '71 Honda CB100, Bell full face helmet, thick gloves, "dingo" boots and longjohns with snow on the ground at 20 something degrees in rural Arkansas. I got to school with a HUGE frozen grin on my face with no regrets. Of course I was an IDIOT at the time but it's what I did. Can you ride in harsh conditions? Yes, as long as you know and understand completely the conditions in which you'll be placed. My worst days on my motorcycles are better than my best days in a cage. |

Hope folks are still reading this thread - I'm looking for advice on tires for winter.
Long story short, I'm looking for tires that will handle sub freezing weather and also cope with a bit of gravel. Background follows. I don't push anything like the limits of the bike, even on asphalt, so I don't need out-and-out performance on smooth, dry, warm roads, but I do want them to behave on the interstate up to 100mph or so. I have to replace the rear on my SV650SY anyway - its a Shinko 009 Raven and badly matched to the front Metzeler ME Z4 (the rear steps out easily and without provocation). I've noticed some folks suggesting Michelin Pilot Roads for cold/wet weather riding above. Elsewhere, I've heard suggestions for chunky tires like Pirelli MT6ORS Corsas. Chunky tires appeal to me, but I'm a newbie and I don't know anything (only 3000 miles of riding experience). My riding is about 10% well groomed gravel, 20% urban streets (with streetcar tracks) and the rest multilane highway. Heading into winter at the moment, temps are getting down to around 40F, and I want to keep riding down to about maybe 15F if I can. So does anyone have some constructive suggestions/experience to share? |

I've seen helmets with heated visors.. anyone know anything about that...?
Any suggestions on helmets? My current Icon helmet lets in a lot of air even with the vents closed... where the visor connects to the helmet, it's by no means air tight. If my head is in a helmet, I shouldn't have to have my ears covered as if it I was wearing no helmet at all. I'm in Chicago too, gearing up for a winter of commuting. Bring it. |
