It's funny, really. The Union thinks that they have HD over a barrel. In fact, HD CAN move assembly to WI. They can't assemble the same volume but it can be done.

I've been arguing the Mgmt side of this but let me say that I do understand the Union position. I don't agree with it, but I do understand it.

Yeah, darn that redistribution of wealth. It isn't like human history isn't a litany of hoarding by the top 1% or anything like that. The Pharoahs became the Kings who became the Robber Barons who became the global CEOs ... and on and on it goes.

I personally think Union membership is so low because there has been a concerted effort to undermine their image in the media, mainly because the major media companies are big businesses themselves and are anti-union. I don't remember EVER seeing a positive article about unions in any papers in my area, for example. Contrast that with some of the scummier companies ... they still get their few little good steps printed, regardless of how rare they are.

Default I'm with you on this one.

It never ceases to amaze me how when some union dispute hits the news, the same BS starts spewing out of the same mouths, every time.

For the past 30 years, the gap between the rich and the poor keeps widening, worse in the US than anywhere else in the world. The war is on, people, and that war has every single person on this website on the same side ... the losing one. Some of you may make decent money, but you aren't making as much as you SHOULD BE because some joker CEO is getting a lottery win - literally - every single year.

So ... what do they do? Divide and conquer, as was pointed out by a poster further down, a two wage scale kills Unions dead. Use the fact that everyone WANTS to be rich to greed them into working against their own best interests. Maybe the solution isn't unionization, but the solution sure isn't kowtowing to an elite class who has shown they don't give a rat's ass about anyone but themselves.

Sucking up just means those jobs move offshore a few years from now instead of right away. Wake up.

The problem with management is that their behaviour ALSO perpetuates the divide between management and the workers. They vote themselves pay raises, but don't give the workers commensurate increases and this has been going on for nearly 40 years straight, in almost every company in North America. They put rules on the books dividing the workers and management and limiting fraternizing between the two groups for a reason and I've lost friends who have crossed that divide and were never the same.

For example, when was the last time you ever heard of the company giving the Union a peek at the books so that everyone could negotiate from the same page? It doesn't matter if the company is flush or dying, the answer to any potential strike is ALWAYS the same ... we don't have the money. That can't always be the case, can it?

"The pressure on management is intense to lower costs.."

And this is what will kill HD, ultimately, a two pronged attack against their most valuable assets - their image as an American motorcycle and their main source of income in the form of the American market.

Build in China, you lose the image right away, but you also become part of the great shift offshore that is gutting the American middle class, taking potential Harley owners and turning them into people who can only dream about owning a Harley. Motorcycles are a luxury item and expensive motorcycles are even more so. I don't know too many people working in the service industry who can afford to buy a Harley, do you? Every year that service industry becomes a greater proportion of overall employment and more people become dreamers.

That being said ... what employee these days has 100% of their health benefits paid by the company? I work at a HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY (new job) and I don't even get that, right in the heart of socialist Canada.

Wow. Just saw this one. Yep, I'm under FERS, too. I hate Social Security, but it's officially part of our "retirement package". Guess I'll be first in line line if the Whipper Snappers try to reduce benefits. This is one hell of a corner the government has painted us into.
