Default Re: When to Use Rear Brake Only?

Rear brake only for increased stability in very low-speed parking lot manuvering. This works because it avoids weight shifts that load and unload the front forks changing the bikes geometry. However anytime you really want to stop and not just scrub off a tiny bit of speed, use the front brake.

Actually socko, it's been a pretty-good day. I just had to take a dump, and was pondering about with what I could wipe my kpaul rather than the "John Wayne" brand toilet-tissue they give us here at work.

End it now. It's doubtful if he actually has any opinion on gun control. It's just another attempt to get a lot of people arguing with him.

Heh heh. Get a load of his "game over" link. It has nothing to do with measured stopping distances. Heh heh.

I've been riding for twenty years, and never been down. kpaul's been "riding" for -what? - five? And his bike was in the shop for six months of that after the branch attack?

Yet when it comes to riding technique, he's got all the answers, while I shut my mouth and open my ears to hear people who've got more miles under their belts, more training and more track time.

I guess that's why I'm so stupid and he's so smart.

There is a time when you should use only the rear brake. If the surface traction is very poor then you can control a bike with the rear tire skidding as long as the front tire has some traction, enough to keep it rolling. That's the one time when using only the rear brake is the only option you have. Doesn't matter what bike you're on.

Physics being what it is, weight transfer to the front is governed strictly by the rate of deceleration, and is unaffected by the brake technique being employed.

Front dive, therefore, is dependent on deceleration rate. The only exception is where the brake system's geometry is designed to provide anti-dive.
