I had a street-legal CR500 about 5 years ago. With appropriate gearing, flywheel weight, and pipe (Top-end oriented, believe it or not) it was quite effective in the New England woods and other riding areas on the east coast.

Put the stock pipe back on, and remove the flywheel weight, and it was a fire breathing monster again.

This is a very flexible engine, and can be exactly what you want it to be. The only downside was the rotational inertia of the HUGE flywheel halves. This made changing direction tiring in the tight woods after a while.

I imagine this wouldn't be a problem in CA.

The basic design didn't change for many years, so just about any year CR would be OK. The updated CR500AF from Service Honda would be even better. I understand they are assembling NEW CR500 engines from parts to build theirs. They will also deliver your new one in a custom configuration, including wide ratio transmission (good choice) and whatever pipe/weight/gearing combo you choose.

I can't imagine any reasonable advantage to getting a TTR225 except the electric start and the opportunity to beat on Burns. LOL!

Oh, if you do get a 500, I hope you get rear tires for free.

Why? I ride my 620RXC with 17" wheels on the street as is. Just bump up the compression damping a bit and it's all good, especially on the tight nasty backroads!

Wow, a street-legal CR500. I had a street-legal '86 YZ490 for a few years, use to ***** off quite a few street bike riders with it. Had it geared to the moon. 15/44 sprockets. It had the "stock"suspension, and the stock 18 & 21 inch hoops. On the freeway the front fender would start to twist about at anything over 80. Got kind of spooky.

My current '87 CR500 had a premium port job done by E.C. Birt hissef back in '88. Has mucho top end, can blast right by KX500 riders, they can't believe it. FMF pipe & re-jetted Kehin. 15/47 gearing good for around 85+.

Wasn't '87 the year Honda put the 500 motor in the 250 frame?

The KX500 was over rated in my opinion.

Big and ponderous. Getting off my CR500 and on to my riding buddy's KX was a real eye-opener. Felt like riding a dirt bike in 1 & 3/4 scale.

Not to mention some mysterious air-box washer ingestion problems.

The big KX never really did it for me.

I think the first "lowboy" CR500 was 88. I know the first lowboy 250 was 87.

I had the old IMS tall fifth gear in my 500. That made street cruising much smoother.
