It seems to me that what this string of comments boils down to is not whether it's a good bike, but how expensive it seems for what you get. And quite right, too - but what it really shows is the huge difference between what bikes are sold at in the US and what they are sold at in the rest of the world. The Beemer's price is more or less the same worldwide - which makes it seem overpriced in the US market and irresistibly cheap elsewhere.

Gas prices in Europe are realistic, sure. The reality of taxes comprising 60% of a commodity's price is a reality you're welcome to have all to yourself!
On the other hand, I will envy you the inexpensive but excellent table wines... |

But that computer you mention is an optional extra. And that windshield, and bags, and centerstand are part of what help drive the cost of the ST up over 14k, at least for the ones I looked at.
The thing should have been priced at 11.5k with everything included except the bags and ABS. That would have been a palatable sum, for a BMW, and given it adequate distance from the big bore bikes. Fun nature, LCO, and durability can be had from many of today's bike builders--they're not BMW exclusives. The competition is rough, and very few people in this land of SUV's are going to care about that great gas mileage, which is a big selling point in the rest of the world. |

Thanks for the fuel mileage info. With the price of gasoline going up, that is something else to consider before buying. A little more money up front may mean a lot less at the pump over the years.
