From what friends there have told me the whole country could aptly be called hell, since the ANC controlled government has gained control. It's hard to believe that the dispicable apartied regime could be replaced by something worse, but that is apparently what has happened. If touring this particular country is your idea of fun perhaps you would enjoy a nice ride through Iraq for your next vacation. VWW

I used to spend 3-6 weeks per year in South Africa on business and I never unsafe at all (except for the one time hiking in a game reserve when we encountered a Black Rhino and the only nearby trees to climb were covered in 1-1/2" thorns).

There is a serious crime problem that the ANC government has not fully gotten to grips with, and in urban areas one must be careful, but, probably not that different from parts of Chicago, LA or most large US cities.

I never had the chance to ride motorcycles on my trips there, but if I could afford it, I would love to sign up for one of their tours.

It is a beautiful country with some of the most friendly people you will find. Not to mention the great wine!

How long since you last visited there Bob? Recently two tourists were killed while out sight seeing in the country side. VWW

It's an array of pipes that are placed on the sides and front/rear of a truck. Each is filled with buckshot and a charge. It was used in parts of Africa to protect truck convoys from communist insurgents and other criminal types.

Think of a 360 degree Claymore mine.
