I'm gonna try steer away from interjecting my politics into any motorcycling fora for the duration of this war, in part on general principles, but moreso because I have very mixed feelings myself.
Your reference to the numbers of American military dead buried in France reminds me of one of my most poignant memories -- driving through Belgium and northern France, seeing the many thousands of graves from the past 2 world wars. It is one thing to read the numbers of dead you cite: it is something much more to see orderly rows of white crosses extending as far as you can see, then to cross the next hill and see the same thing all over again. When you see it, the nationality of the soldiers buried there seems largely irrelevant. It is a combination of the enormity of the dead, while at the same time, the reminder that each one was an individual, with a wife or lover, parents and children who were left behind. Much like the impact of seeing all the individual names on the Vietnam War Memorial. To me, that was an even more emotional experience than the opening scenes from Band of Brothers. Regardless of how justifiable the cause (and it is hard to imagine what could be more justifiable than stopping Hitler), or how necessary the war, the fact is that there is a terrible cost in human suffering -- on all sides. Best Regards Bob |
