EICMA 2012: Milan Motorcycle Show
The worldwide motorcycle industry turns its eyes to Milan, Italy, next week for the 70th edition of the EICMA motorcycle show. Motorcycle.com will cover all the big news coming out of Milan starting Nov. 12.
The show season has already started with last month’s Intermot show in Cologne, Germany, with a number of world premieres such as the 2013 BMW R1200GS, the KTM 1190 Adventure, the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 concept and Yamaha’s Crossplane Triple sculpture.
As big as Intermot was, EICMA will be even bigger, with several significant new announcements from Italian firms Ducati, MV Agusta and Piaggio. BMW devoted its Intermot presentation to the new GS but held other big news for EICMA. And then there’s Honda which is expected to unveil a number of new models in Milan.

Aprilia
Aprilia introduces its new semi-active suspension system wth the new Caponord 1200.
ABS, a larger fuel tank and a couple more horses highlight the updates to the RSV4 R.
BMW
BMW is replcing it F800ST with a more touring-oriented F800GT.
BMW R1200GS 90 Jahre BMW Motorrad
BMW is celebrating its 90th anniversary in the motorcycle business with three special edition models. This one is based on the 2012 GS.
BMW R1200R 90 Jahre BMW Motorrad
BMW produced its first motorcycle in 1923, a 468cc Boxer called the R32.
BMW R1200RT 90 Jahre BMW Motorrad
BMW originally built airplane engines but was forced to change its business under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
As if three special models aren't enough, BMW says it will introduce an all-new air-cooled Boxer in 2013.
CRP
If the Panigale S wasn't exotic enough, Ducati unveiled a new 1199 Panigale R which will form the basis of its WSBK racer.
The Ducati Diavel gets a new touring-oriented version known as the Strada.
The Hypermotard line gets updated with a new 821cc liquid-cooled engine.
The sportiness of the Hypermotard and the touring capability of the Multistrada meet in the new Ducati Hyperstrada
Honda
Many people thought the CB1100 was going to be one of those elegant models that would never be brought to North America. Many people were wrong.
Honda introduces a new mid-sized naked standard, one of three new members of its new 500 series.
The adventure-styled member of Honda's 500 series, the CB500X shares many similarities with the recently launched NC700X.
The Honda CBR500R is a natural stepping point between the CBR250R and the CBR600RR.
Rumors of the demise of Honda's supersport prove premature as the CBR600RR returns with new MotoGP-derived aerodynamics.
The venerable Honda Gold Wing gets a new lighter, sleeker-looking variant in the F6B.
The Forza (aka the Reflex) is back for Europe and Canada in the new 279cc NSS300.
Husqvarna
Husqvarna presented an updated version of the Baja concept, itself inspired by Steve McQueen's Husqvarna Cross 400.
KTM
KTM 1290 Super Duke R Prototype
It's still only at the protype stage but KTM says the 1290 Super Duke will begin press testing in 2013.
KTM's middle naked 690 Duke gets an R version with an Akrapovic silencer and more aggressive ergonomics.
KTM adds to its stable of small-displacment streetbikes with the new 390 Duke.
Moto Guzzi
Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom
The Moto Guzzi California 1400's engine is the largest ever European production V-Twin.
Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring
The California 1400 will be available in both Custom and Touring versions.
MV Agusta
MV Agusta Brutale 1090, 1090R and 1090RR
MV Agusta created a larger version of the Brutale 675, increasing the displacement to 798cc.

The 2013 MV Agusta F4 comes in three flavors and getting the MVICS electronics package.
The Brutale 800's three-cylinder engine is also used to power the new motard-style MV Agusta Rivale 800.
Over
Italian company Over presented this new rugged-looking utility motorcycle. Production is scheduled to begin in the spring.
Triumph
Triumph's supersport gets a new three-cylinder engine and updated styling.
The production version of the Vespa was unveiled a year after the futuristic concept was revealed at EICMA 2011.
Aprilia
We hoped Aprilia will unveil its new Caponord 1200 adventure-tourer at Intermot but instead got an ABS-equipped RSV4 that includes a more powerful V-4 engine. We should have figured the Piaggio Group would save the Caponord for its home show in Milan.
Benelli
The company may be owned by China’s Qianjiang Group, but Benelli is still an Italian manufacturer and will be making a splash with three new models: the single-cylinder C250 and C150 and four-cylinder BN600.
BMW
The new R1200GS will obviously be displayed at EICMA, but we expect it to be joined by a number of other models. BMW has already confirmed it will present a 30th anniversary edition K1300S, as well as a new “mid-range” model, expected to be the new F800GT tourer. Spy photographers have spotted BMW working on a naked version of the S1000RR and a new roadster, so we hope to see those at EICMA as well.
CRP
Italian electric motorcycle maker CRP will display a running prototype of its first ever production model, the Energica, claiming 134 hp and 118 ft-lb and a top speed of more than 135 mph. A large-capacity 11.7-KwH battery promises a range of nearly 100 miles.
Ducati
Ducati traditionally holds its big reveal on the night before EICMA’s official press days, and this year will be no different. At Intermot, Ducati showed its updated Multistrada 1200 as well as a special edition 848 EVO Corse and 20th anniversary edition Monster, but much bigger news should be coming from Milan in the form of three new models powered by a revised version of the 848’s liquid-cooled engine.
Honda
Honda will join Ducati in presenting its EICMA offerings on Nov. 12, the day before the official press day. We know from American Honda’s teaser campaign it will introduce six new models to the U.S., but we’re not sure what they will be yet. At least one of them will be from a new 500cc series of bikes which includes the CBR500, CB500R and CB500X available in world markets. We hope another will be the retro-styled CB1100 Honda showed at Intermot. Honda has also been quiet on the status of the CBR600RR which has yet to be confirmed as a returning model. Hopefully we’ll hear some news on the supersport front from Honda at EICMA.
Husqvarna
BMW-owned Husqvarna has had a big year, introducing a number of new streetbikes and rapidly increasing its production and sales figures. Though it was founded by Swedes and is now owned by Germans, Husqvarna’s factory is in Italy. Over the last couple of years, Husqvarna has used EICMA to showcase new concepts, such as the Mille 3 pictured here, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it does so again this year.
KTM
KTM is expected to reveal a new member of its small-displacement Duke line. Reports out of India has KTM set to reveal a 375cc version to be called the 390 Duke, which we hope will be joined by a new 1190 Super Duke, using the same RC8R-derived engine as the 1190 Adventure.
Moto Guzzi
Piaggio is expecting big things from its Moto Guzzi brand this year. Last year, Moto Guzzi revamped its V7 lineup with a new engine, and now the manufacturer will do the same with its California. Piaggio has been showing off the new Moto Guzzi California 1400 in prototype form, but the final production version will appear at EICMA. The base California 1400 will likely be joined by a couple of variants including a touring version pictured above.
MV Agusta
Exotic Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta has a number of models debuting in Milan. In the weeks leading up to the show, MV Agusta has already announced an updated four-cylinder Brutale 1090 lineup and a new three-cylinder Brutale 800. The 800’s engine will also appear in a motard-style model, the MV Agusta Rivale.
Triumph
Triumph showcased its updated Street Triple at Intermot. EICMA will see the official debut of an updated version of the three-cylinder Daytona 675. Hopefully it will come with an "R" version as well.
Vespa
Vespa showed a bold concept of the future of the brand at the 2011 EICMA show with its Quarantasei concept. That future is now, with Vespa expected to reveal the production version of the Quarantasei, which parent company Piaggio now refers to as the 946.
Yamaha
Yamaha surprised many visitors at Intermot by announcing the development of a new three-cylinder engine. It may be too much to expect much more on the new Triple beyond the artsy display shown in Cologne. Yamaha has long been rumored to be developing a small-displacement model to compete against the Kawasaki Ninja 300, Honda CBR250R and Suzuki Inazuma in developed markets, and EICMA would be a good time for the fourth member of the Japanese Big Four to announce an entry-level model.
