2011 Sturgis Rally Report

Seventy-One years old and still partying!

Celebrating its 71st year, the South Dakota rally is only slightly older than Daytona’s annual spring party and much more fun, in my opinion. In short, if you’re a “biker” (trailer or not) versus a “motorcyclist”, skip Daytona and go to South Dakota, you’ll love it! And if you’re a photographer, you’ll probably love it even more.

This was my first experience in Sturgis, and let me tell you, it’s been a crazy week for me, shooting feature after feature after event and non-stop concerts. I shot more than 27,000 pictures on my primary DSLR camera at Sturgis, and about 6000 more on my Canon G12 pocket camera. And even then, I only got to see less than 25% of what the rally has to offer!

Having been my first trip to the rally, there’s so much I can say. I rode over 4000 miles, did two Iron Butt runs there and back plus a few side tours around the area. But after camping for 10 straight days, and riding that many miles, I needed a full day of sleep.

But for now, here’s a look at the 2011 Sturgis Rally in the Black Hills of South Dakota, as seen through the eyes of a motorcycle photographer.
