Over and Out: Women's Dirt Bike, Dual-Sport, and ADV Campout

There’s something incredibly special about a stack of women on dirtbikes out in the wilds of Pennsylvania. Sunlight rippling down through the trees, the canopy above emitting a soft green glow that envelops the trails and gives a sense of absolute magic surrounding you as you rip down a trail chasing your friends, new and old alike. While it very much sounds like I’m describing a Disney version of dirtbike heaven – adorable wildlife included – for the women who attend Over and Out Moto in Tamaqua, PA this is very much a true-to-life experience.

2021 International Motorcycle Show at Sonoma Raceway

Despite gloomy reports of a new surge of COVID-19 cases, you can’t shake the feeling that America’s vast and ravenous economy is roaring back to full-tilt boogie. And Northern California’s motorcycle community had a coming-out party of sorts with the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS) at Sonoma Raceway. The show marked the return of the IMS to Northern California after a six-year absence and everyone I talked to involved in the show – attendees and exhibitors alike – seemed to agree with me when I said the show seemed to have a new energy that made me feel a wee glimmer of hope for the future of motorcycling in the USA.

California Trials Invitational Presented by GASGAS

Trials is an incredible sport. What those competitors manage to do on two-wheels seems to disregard the laws of physics. I have to admit though, while I find the feats of trials riders’ gravity-defying moto acrobatics mind-boggling, I’ve maintained only a passing interest in trials that has rarely strayed further than spending more time than I should watching videos of Toni Bou, HRC’s 26-time world trials champion, on Instagram. That said, when the invite came through the MO inbox from GasGas to attend its inaugural California Trial Invitational in Murrieta, CA, I was more than willing to accept the assignment.

MotoGP 2020 Season Preview - Part One

Repsol Honda phenom Marc Marquez is, as per usual, the early favorite to make it seven world championships in eight tries in 2020. Sure, there are a lot of fast challengers – Yamaha NKT (new kid in town) Fabio Quartararo, Ducati #1 Andrea Dovizioso, Yamaha’s inconsistent Maverick Viñales topping that list – and Marquez is coming off right shoulder surgery. Sadly, the result is likely to be the same. If you’re planning to wager on anyone other than ReMarcAble Marc, best get yourself some odds.

Hooray! November has arrived, and after relentless teasing ( here and here) from some manufacturers, we’re ready to see what Model Year 2020 has in store for us. The Tokyo Motor Show had some early entries from Kawasaki, the biggest of which was the 2020 Kawasaki Z H2. Then Ducati stepped up with its own early announcements about the updated Panigale V4 family and the new Panigale V2, plus the beastly Ducati Streetfighter V4 and V4 S. So, you could say that we’re all warmed up and ready to hit the road.

Approaching Round 18, the MotoGP and Moto3 titles have been decided. All that remains is for series leader and younger brother Alex Marquez to seize the 2019 Moto2 championship by the lapels and assert his heritage. He is a Marquez and he is overdue. He needs to put his boot on the throat of the title chase and clinch in Malaysia. Above all, he must avoid some kind of dogfight in Valencia, an opportunity to choke away a title and a budding career. Otherwise he gets stuck with the “little brother that couldn’t” label the rest of his life.

It is now clear that Honda’s 2019 MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has his sights set on the single season points record of 383 set by The Rider Formerly Known as Jorge Lorenzo with Yamaha in 2010. Why else bother winning the Motul Grand Prix of Japan when a win would mean so much more to any number of other riders? Winning motorcycle races is in #93’s DNA, much they way it was with Nicky Hayden. He just can’t help himself.

On a day completely bereft of surprise, Marc Marquez secured his sixth MotoGP world championship and eighth title overall with a merciless win over ascendant French rookie Fabio Quartararo. Finally, in the last turn of the last lap he broke the rookie’s heart with the expected cutback move and sprint to the flag. These, then, are the opening shots in what promises to be the next great rivalry in grand prix motorcycle racing.

Plucky young challenger Alex Rins trails peerless champion for the entire race, makes a late mistake, but recovers in time to steal the win by 13/thousandths of a second in one of the closest MotoGP tilts of all time. Marc Marquez lost a relatively meaningless battle but happily extended his lead in the war to a dispiriting 78 points.

MotoGP Losail Results 2019

In a virtual carbon copy of last year’s riveting Grand Prix of Qatar, Andrea Dovizioso, the second-best rider on the planet today, edged defending world champion Marc Marquez by .023 seconds to capture the win. Cal Crutchlow, the Black Knight of MotoGP, took the third step on the podium on a right ankle held together with bandaids and baling wire. Parity has arrived in MotoGP, with tonight’s race producing the 8th closest podium in history and the fastest Top 15 ever. Last year, Dovizioso’s winning margin was .027 seconds, suggesting Marquez, his surgically-repaired shoulder mostly healed, is making progress. Comparing this year’s top seven riders to last year, the only significant difference is Suzuki’s Alex Rins. Last year Rins, whose season started miserably despite my jocking him all over the place, crashed out mid-race. This year, he was in the mix the entire time, led the race for a couple of partial laps, and finished fourth, barely 14/100ths behind Crutchlow. He was followed by Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi (who started 14th), Ducati factory rider Danilo Petrucci and polesitter Maverick Vinales who, with a full fuel tank and cold tires, rides like the second coming of James Ellison. Last year, behind Dovi and Marquez, it was Rossi, Crutchlow, Petrucci, and Vinales. This, I suggest, is what they mean by “the usual suspects.” Embed from Getty Images
